Kenya Camping Safaris

A camping safari or staying in small private mobile camps is one of the best ways to experience Kenya 's natural attractions. The safaris have been designed to include a variety of habitats so that the widest diversity of wildlife can be seen. The camps are sited in private conservancies so that walking and night drives may be taken but are also conveniently located for easy access to Amboseli and Nakuru national parks and the Mara.

Transport is by four-wheel-drive Toyota Land cruiser with roof hatches. Your driver-guide is a wildlife and nature expert and member of the Kenya Professional Safari Guides Association.

A safari cook travels with the entourage. At each camp site we will have staff that does the work like washing up, heating water for showers, doing the cooking and serving the food but clients also help put up and take down their tents.

Equipment is carried in a trailer behind the vehicle - when in camp the trailer is removed and game drives are done in the vehicle. Tents are heavy-duty canvas dome tents for 2 persons. Clients bring their own sleeping bag and a towel but all other camp furniture and equipment is provided. Food is of the same quality as in a luxury camp - produced by our experienced safari cook- and is included in the price, (not bought through a "kitty" like some other camping safaris). Camps are set up on our own exclusive campsites. Drinks other than mineral water are not included.

DAY 2: CAMEL TREKKING / WALKING

After breakfast, depart with your camels and Morans into the bush. You will trek through the area never quite sure what you will see. It should be remembered that this safari is not primarily a game viewing safari, it is one led by, and in total harmony with the Samburu people. Picnic lunch en route, afternoon arrival at your pre-prepared camp where your cook will be ready to offer you afternoon tea and snacks. Later on you may decide to take a guided walk through the bush before dinner. Overnight under the stars.

DAY 3 ; 4 ; 5 : CAMEL TREKKING / WALKING

Mattresses pad the locally made wooden frames on the camels, after breakfast you set out through the bush either riding or walking as you may choose. It is a leisurely pace, and you change from walking to riding, as you may prefer. You will pass Samburu Manyattas that your lead Moran can organize for you to visit. As this is spontaneous, the Morans will discuss with the elders, permission for your entering, and you will be asked to pay a small amount of fee to be offered as courtesy. Each day you will have picnic lunch in the bush, then continue to your next campsite, where your cook will be waiting for you. Most evenings are beside water and a hot water shower will be erected for you to wash the dust off (water allowing)

DAY 6 : MARARAL

The camel trek ends late morning at the Club House. Here you will take lunch before walking with your Moran guides into the frontier town of Maralal . There are crafts to be seen, the Samburu market, and a way of life different from other places you might have visited on your holiday. In the evening the Morans and their ladies will dance for you at the Club House where you are free to take as many pictures as you may want, even to join in the dancing if you feel up to it ! This night you are in the Bandas again and can clean up before your free return transfer in the morning.
